How I got involved with the Fourth of July Association…
1976 – our bicentennial – Boy Scout Troop 26, where I was Scoutmaster, marched in the Fourth of July Parade; the Scouts loved it. For the next year I started organizing all Evanston Scouts and Cubs to be in the Parade. In 1980, as leader of Girl Scouts Troops 17 and 31 (I have 2 daughters) I organized all the Evanston Girl Scout Troops to be in the Parade, continuing in this role thru 1984. In 1985 I served as a Parade Marshal.
The next spring I received a telephone call from long-time Trustee Paul Wilson: The man putting the Marshal crew together needed help. When I called on him I was told he had no time for this: take over the Marshal corps. Instead of the 15 Marshals already involved I brought in new personnel for a total of 35 Marshals and created new expectations and training: Marshals would go with their units down the Parade route. Keep the parade moving: no gaps.
Parade Marshal Chairman 1986 – 1989. Parade Chairman 1990 – 1992. Celebration Manager 1993 – 1995. Treasurer 1997 – 1999. Secretary 2000 – 2009. Nominating Committee 2010 – present.
Why do I stay involved?
Community spirit: get people working together and feeling good about themselves, others and the city/state/nation.
Why should others get involved?
To be part of something worthwhile much greater than themselves: look to the future.
